The oral defense of the dissertation marks the final milestone of a PhD and poses unique communication challenges. This workshop is designed for doctoral candidates who wish to prepare intensively for their disputation.
Drawing on the participants’ individual experiences, the workshop focuses on developing effective presentation techniques and defense strategies. Participants learn how to interpret and present scientific findings clearly and how to respond confidently and appropriately to critical questions.

Resilience is more than just “bouncing back.” Research shows that people who develop resilience not only cope with stress and setbacks but can also thrive when facing obstacles. Academic life is full of pressure, change, and perceived failure, which can leave us feeling low on emotional and mental resources. This interactive workshop helps participants identify and build the mental and emotional skills needed to navigate academic challenges with confidence. Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.

New: Statistical Methods and Resources. A Concise Overview [Online Information Event]

The event will be held in English.
Doctoral researchers need statistical methods in many areas of their daily research work, for example when they plan experiments or analyze existing data sets. This online event features a 60-minute talk, followed by an open discussion. The talk provides a high-level overview of questions that statistics can help address, including causal inference and prediction. It then presents resources (such as textbooks, software and academic journals) for learning about and implementing statistical methods. While the talk does not dive into the details of any particular method, it intends to help doctoral researchers navigate the abundance of available resources, and to provide a starting point for those new to the field.
In the discussion, participants will explore how statistics relates to their own research areas. Possible themes include: What data are central to your field? What questions drive your discipline, and how might statistical approaches help answer them?

Doctoral researchers need statistical methods in many areas of their daily research work, for example when they plan experiments or analyze existing data sets. This online event features a 60-minute talk, followed by an open discussion. The talk provides a high-level overview of questions that statistics can help address, including causal inference and prediction. It then presents resources (such as textbooks, software and academic journals) for learning about and implementing statistical methods. While the talk does not dive into the details of any particular method, it intends to help doctoral researchers navigate the abundance of available resources, and to provide a starting point for those new to the field.
In the discussion, participants will explore how statistics relates to their own research areas. Possible themes include: What data are central to your field? What questions drive your discipline, and how might statistical approaches help answer them?

For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.

We will also discuss opportunities and limitations of integrating AI into the proposal writing process.

A career in industry is an attractive option for many young scientists after completing their doctorate or postdoc phase. And quite a few actually choose to leave academia with the aspiration of entering responsible positions in the private sector.
However, given that employees in private enterprises often are required to both pursue different goals and work differently compared to employees in research institutions, scientists need to adopt different mindsets and competences for succeeding in a business environment. In addition to specialist professional knowledge, transferrable skills in the areas of management methods, leadership and communication are particularly required.
To give you a head start for a successful career entry in the private sector, this e-learning program provides initial insights into key competences specifically for the business context. A selection of short online courses examines a variety of relevant topics, taking examples from everyday business life as their starting point. Apart from conveying theoretical background information they offer practical advice and provide suggestions for exercises and self-reflexion. Competences acquired by working thouroughly on these e-learnings can also be helpful for similar tasks in other than industrial work contexts, of course.

Writing is essential to academic success, yet finding uninterrupted time for focused work can be challenging in the busy life of a young researcher. Shut up and write! offers young researchers at KIT a quiet, structured space to make real progress on their writing—whether it’s a paper, grant proposal, or other academic text. Each session comprises 90 minutes. Every other week there will be a short 15-minute input by the instructor on topics such as writing strategies, time management, or overcoming blocks. After this, you have time and space to work on your text in peace and quiet. In our teaching weeks, we also offer individual 35-minute one-on-one coaching sessions booked with the instructor to discuss writing challenges, receive feedback, or seek advice on structure and clarity. The rest of the group writes quietly during this time.
This course is not a comprehensive introduction to academic writing, but rather a space to strengthen personal writing habits, receive tailored guidance, and build momentum through structured practice.
Participants will leave with a clearer sense of their own writing process, new tools for staying productive, and meaningful progress on their current project. No preparation is required—just bring your own writing project and get started.

Der letzte große Meilenstein der Promotion ist die mündliche Verteidigung der Arbeit, die besondere kommunikative Herausforderungen mit sich bringt. Dieses Seminar richtet sich an Promovierende, die sich intensiv auf ihre Disputation vorbereiten wollen.
Der thematische Schwerpunkt des Workshops widmet sich der Fragerunde innerhalb der Prüfung: Wie gehe ich mit schwierigen Fragen um? Wie reagiere ich auf kritische bis provozierende Fragen? Wie kann ich damit umgehen, wenn ich die Antwort auf eine Frage nicht weiß? Was mache ich bei einem „Black-Out“?
Zu Beginn des Seminars verschaffen wir uns einen Überblick über Ablauf und Bedeutung einer Disputation. Wir sammeln Fragen, die typischerweise in Disputationen auftreten.
Im Anschluss werden fünf Strategien für eine überzeugende argumentative sowie rhetorische Positionierung während der Disputation vermittelt. Diese werden in Einzel- und Gruppenarbeit trainiert sowie im wichtigsten Bestandteil des Workshops – den Disputations-Simulationen – von den Promovierenden aktiv umgesetzt. Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.

In Zeiten automatisiert erzeugter Inhalte wird das Eigene zum entscheidenden Unterschied. Wer komplexe Inhalte vermittelt, sollte diese nicht nur zeigen, sondern visuell erzählen. Individuelle Skizzen (Sketchnotes) und eine bewusst eingesetzte Handschrift schaffen Nähe, Verständlichkeit und rhetorische Wirkung – und machen Präsentationen unverwechselbar.
In diesem Seminar lernen Sie, komplexe Inhalte mithilfe von Sketchnotes und Schriftbild strukturiert und rhetorisch präzise zu visualisieren. Sie erfahren, wie die „Sprache der Bilder“ Kommunikation nachhaltig unterstützt, gehirngerecht wirkt und kulturübergreifend verständlich ist. Ziele sind, zum einen Techniken zur professionellen Gestaltung analoger und digitaler Präsentationsmedien (z.B. Flipchart, Whiteboard, ggf. Publications of research results is the currency in modern science. It might not be your favourite occupation, but it is a decisive one, strongly determining your future research and career opportunities. In this course, you will be introduced to the process of writing a scientific paper. In order to deepen and apply this knowledge, you will also actually produce a manuscript based on your research data (and one that might serve as the foundation for a journal submission). Questions about other forms of text like conference papers can also be discussed.

Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
To keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.

This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.

Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt.
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Berufsoptionen analysieren und das eigene Profil schärfen: Entwickeln Sie auf Basis Ihrer biografischen Eckdaten eine klare Zielvorstellung. Welche Karrieremöglichkeiten bieten sich? Wie finden Sie Stellen, die zu Ihnen passen? Bewerbungsunterlagen optimieren: Wir besprechen Inhalt, Form und Struktur zur Erstellung überzeugender Lebensläufe und Anschreiben – angepasst an nationale und internationale Anforderungen. Erfolgreich ins Bewerbungsgespräch: Von der Vorbereitung über Selbstpräsentation bis hin zur Interaktion – wir erarbeiten alle wichtigen Stationen des Gesprächs sowie wichtige Kriterien und typische Abläufe. Sie erhalten individuelles Feedback durch Übungselemente. Unterschiede in Bewerbungen innerhalb und außerhalb der Wissenschaft: Erfahren Sie, wie sich die Anforderungen und Herangehensweisen je nach Berufsfeld unterscheiden und wie Sie Ihre Bewerbung darauf abstimmen können. Ihre individuelle Bewerbungsstrategie: Entwickeln Sie einen Plan, der Ihre Stärken gezielt hervorhebt.

Dieser Workshop ist eine ideale Ergänzung zu unseren Karriereplanungs-Workshops „After the Doctorate. Career Planning for Doctoral Researchers” und “How to Shape Your Future. Career Planning for Postdocs”. Er kann aber genauso gut unabhängig von diesen besucht werden.
Da für Bewerbungen in Deutschland, insbesondere außerhalb der Wissenschaft, oftmals die deutsche Sprache üblich ist, findet diese Veranstaltung auf Deutsch statt.
Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Promovierende und Postdocs am KIT (Mitglieder des KHYS). Wenn Sie derzeit noch kein Mitglied bei KHYS sind, können Sie sich hier registrieren.
Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 7. und 8. Dezember 2026.
