Nachwuchsforschende werden mit verschiedenen Herausforderungen konfrontiert, die zu Konflikten führen können, zum Beispiel im Betreuungsverhältnis, innerhalb der Arbeitsgruppe, im Hinblick auf Finanzierungsfragen oder hinsichtlich des selbststrukturierten Arbeitens. Die herausfordernde Phase kann auch persönliche Probleme mit sich bringen. Unter anderem bietet das Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS) in der Regel jeden Donnerstag von 15:00 bis 17:00 Uhr eine offene Sprechstunde zur Beratung in Konfliktfällen an. Dort können Sie in einem geschützten Rahmen Ihre Situation darlegen. In dieser Erstberatung informieren und beraten wir Sie individuell, wie Sie mit herausfordernden Situationen und Konflikten umgehen können und verweisen ggf. an weitere Stellen. Gerne können Sie auch einen individuellen Beratungstermin (auch per MS Teams) vereinbaren. Jutta Klein-Hitpaß steht Ihnen für Fragen oder Terminabsprachen gerne zur Verfügung.

Junior researchers face different challenges in their research period. These can lead to conflicts, for example concerning the supervising relationship, within a working group, regarding financing issues, or concerning self-structured working. This challenging phase can also lead to personal problems. Should you find yourself in such or similar situations, you can find support at various advisory offices at KIT. KHYS offers open consultation hours in principle every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. There you can safely discuss your situation. During this initial consultation, we offer information and advice on how to deal with challenging situations and conflicts. If applicable, we will refer you to other advisory offices. You are also welcome to make an appointment (also for an MS Teams meeting). Jutta Klein-Hitpaß will be happy to answer any questions you may have or to offer you an appointment.

Application Process for the Refund Program
You can apply here via our event calendar. Please make sure that you have chosen your course level and that you have taken the online placement test recommended for the course (if necessary) before applying for the refund. Deadline for the application for the refund program at KHYS is March 21, 2025.
 
For successful applicants the process will be as follows:
KHYS will inform all applicants of the outcome of their application until April 4, 2025. If your application for the refund is successful, please do not forget to register for the German course you have chosen at Studienkolleg at the beginning of the semester.
 
Important: Unlike in previous semesters, KHYS will only make the refund if you have passed the final exam. After the course has ended, KHYS will ask you to hand in all necessary documents and information in order to process the payment for the refund.

The course advises young scientists on how to publish the hard-won results of their research and to plan an appropriate publication strategy for their early academic career. The course will begin by exploring why researchers in the sciences should publish their results. It will then guide participants through the processes involved in getting an article or paper published in an academic journal, including:
Reasons for publishing your work and some of the key factors you need to consider when getting started
Navigating the pre-submission stage, from planning your time to preparing supplementary material, information and metadata
The importance of review for quality control and the requirements of the review process
Relevant resources, platforms and social media that can help ensure you publish in an impactful way
 
Duration of this course: 150 min
 
The indicated course duration refers to the pure review of the learning content. Please plan additional time for working on exercises and transfer tasks.
 
This e-learning course is being offered in a self-learning format. You therefore have the option to begin at any time convenient to you and work through it at your own pace.

On many occasions, young scientists communicate about their work, project or institution with the public or the media. This basic course of the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik) gives participants an overview of communicating with target groups outside of academia and teaches first practical basics. The focus is on topics such as dimensions of science communication, the interaction of communicators and target groups, or dealing with the media.

The e-learning course contains videos and animations, texts, audio and screencasts. The course is provided in English or German, participants can choose the laguage after registration.

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 2. und 3. April 2025.
 
Ziel der Workshops ist es, den Teilnehmenden Hinweise und Anregung für ihr wissenschaftliches Schreibprojekt (z. B. die Dissertation) zu geben. Dafür werden die Grundlagen des wissenschaftlichen Schreibens bewusst gemacht und Tipps und Hinweise gegeben, um den Schreibprozess zu unterstützen und zu beschleunigen. Der fachliche Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Natur- und Ingenieurswissenschaften, insbesondere bei Umgang und Auswahl von Texten, Quellen, Literatur etc.
 
Die Inhalte der Workshops richten sich auch nach den Bedürfnissen und Wünschen der Teilnehmenden, die hierzu im Vorfeld durch das KHYS sowie in einer kurzen Vorstellungsrunde befragt werden. Folgende Themen sind vorgesehen:
Zielklärung für eine wissenschaftliche Arbeit Aufgabenstellung/Exposee - Inhalte eines wissenschaftlichen Textes Struktur und Aufbau eines wissenschaftlichen Textes Normen/Anforderungen an wissenschaftliche Texte Recherche und Dokumentation von Literatur Umgang mit dem fremden Text (incl. zitieren und paraphrasieren) Erarbeitung einer Rohfassung Text-Bild-Bezüge Umgang mit Schreibblockaden Feedback auf Textproben geben und nehmen Arbeitsschritte der Textproduktion Zeitplanung  
Lehrmethoden im Workshop sind Lehrvortrag und Lehrgespräch, Demonstration von Beispielen, Schreibübungen, Präsentationen und Feedback auf Übungsergebnisse. Research data are the basis and result of scientific work. The basic principles of good research data management (RDM) and good scientific practice therefore include a systematic approach to the collection and, if necessary, subsequent use and evaluation of data, as well as to their storage and accessibility.
 
The course offers a concise introduction to the basics and aspects of research data management with the associated terms, most important models and processes and of course some helpful tools. A Q&A session is planned after the presentation, offering participants time to ask specific questions relating to their own RDM.
 
An intensive workshop with in-depth practical insights into some of the services and tools presented at KIT as part of the KHYS further education program entitled "Research Data Management Intensive Course. Practical Applications and Tools Supported by KIT" takes place on in English.

Project management is a key competence - both for future tasks outside academia and for the day-to-day work of researchers. Projects succeed when professional expertise is combined with solid management and self-management skills.
 
This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to the core principles of project management and is designed for doctoral researchers and postdocs with no previous knowledge.
 
Whether managing a project independently, such as a doctoral dissertation, or working collaboratively within a (research) team, participants will learn how to engage more deeply with project frameworks and elevate their approach to project-based work. The workshop also highlights the significance of project management skills for long-term career advancement, underscoring their utility in both academic and non-academic pathways.
 
After the workshop you will be able to:
Plan and manage projects systematically: define project objectives SMART, plan scope, resources, time, stakeholder analysis, risk analysis Understand and implement the project life cycle: Roles, activities, milestones, communication in the project, risk management, work breakdown structure, project control Differentiate between classic, agile and hybrid project management Avoid typical pitfalls and utilise new solutions Use important online project management tools

Stressmanagement ist heutzutage eine wichtige Kompetenz, um gesund und ausgeglichen die vielfältigen beruflichen und privaten Aufgaben und Anforderungen zu bewältigen. Vielleicht fühlen Sie sich manchmal erschöpft oder angespannt und möchten gelassener durch die Promotion oder die Postdoc-Phase und Ihr Forschungsprojekt gehen – oder wollen einfach nur potentiellen Stressbelastungen vorbeugen. Um gestärkt durch den Wissenschaftsalltag zu gehen, sind neben fachlicher Expertise und hoher Motivation auch eine gewisse Stressresistenz, ein gutes Selbstmanagement und ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Anspannung und Entspannung wichtig. Dieser Workshop bietet Ihnen ein abwechslungsreiches Angebot aus Informationen, Selbstreflexionen und praktischen Übungen für ein erfolgreiches Stressmanagement.

What is the relation between good and successful research, on the one hand, and ethical and responsible research, on the other hand?
 
This workshop focuses on typical conflicts that particularly early career researchers may face in the context of a publish-or-perish culture: Is it okay for me to ignore and leave out statistical “outliers” when presenting my research data in case they impact the overall results more than I would like? Is such data “massaging” already scientific misconduct? How transparent must research practice be, when at the same time one has to succeed in the competitive world of scientific research? How to respond when you notice academic misconduct by a colleague? How should you handle problematic expectations of your supervisor?
 
In this workshop, however, we not only want to explain that these areas of conflict exist, but above all provide tools that can help you make your own decisions. We will do this by discussing realistic cases and using these cases to illustrate how easy it is to overlook important things and thus unintentionally overstep boundaries. In this way, participants can acquire the skills they need to recognise and avoid scientific misconduct. The workshop provides general skills and knowledge of research ethics needed for scientists to address the questions raised above. Participants attain the skills to rationally reflect on their role as a scientist from an ethical standpoint, including the specific expectations that role involves in a broader social context.
 
The workshop will show that successful research goes hand in hand with ethical and responsible research.
 
Please plan 3-4 hours for pre-workshop activities.

For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
 
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.

Have you just started your doctoral research period? And would like to know more about the services offered at KIT for doctoral researchers? Then come and join other German and international KIT PhD students at the welcome event for doctoral researchers. In a presentation, we will give you plenty of information on how to best profit from the doctoral research period (including information on research stays abroad and services offered at KIT). In addition, there will be two brief testimonials by more advanced fellow researchers. They will share their experiences with you concerning doing the PhD at KIT and will be happy to answer your questions. At the end of the English-language event, there will be time for some networking during a get-together involving snacks and drinks.

We would in particular like to welcome those who have recently started their doctorate – however, the event is open to all German and international KIT doctoral researchers.

Academic careers are risky business: as a postdoc, you have to make wide-ranging decisions about how to develop your research and your career. This workshop will help you plan your next steps.
 
Through short impulses from the trainer, individual research and reflection, and group discussions, the workshop will deepen your understanding of both the conditions that shape academic careers in Germany and of the opportunities and challenges of international academic careers.
 
Aspects covered include:
Permanent positions in academia: what they are and how to work towards them The postdoc phase in Germany: relevant positions, and their pros and cons Necessary achievements (publications, third-party funding and others): how to assess your situation How to develop your scientific profile and academic independence How to deal with the international dimension of research communities and academic careers How to network strategically What do you want to achieve, and how will you get there? Formulate your objectives and make a plan  
There will also be room for your individual questions.

Agile project management allows running projects in changing and uncertain environments. Originally developed in the IT sector, agile project management is now widely used across various fields to respond flexibly and effectively to evolving conditions.
 
This one-day workshop introduces participants to the core ideas and principles of agile project management. The workshop offers the opportunity to use specific tools in practice to better understand the agile project management approach by using these applications. Additionally, you’ll explore IT tools such as Jira and Trello. Beyond theoretical input, the workshop emphasizes practical application through hands-on exercises, enabling participants to actively engage and apply what they learn.
 
The workshop will also provide a better understanding of SCRUM as a framework in the agile cosmos and its specifics.
 
After the workshop participants will have the opportunity to further explore the workshop contents through a provided podcast and a topic-specific GPT, allowing for independent learning.
 
After the workshop, you will be able to:
Deal with the most important terms and use tools from agile project management like Kanban. Distinguish when to use agile vs. traditional project management approaches. Utilize IT tools such as Jira and Trello to streamline agile project management. Adapt to changes in project requirements with flexibility and efficiency.

Developing successful grant applications is an essential skill for a career in research. In this workshop you will learn tools and background information that, on the one hand, will help you to efficiently develop your research idea into a research project which matches your target funding program and, on the other hand, to write it up in a grant proposal of high quality.

Please note: Participants who enter the workshop with an idea for a research project will benefit the most from its program. Dieser Workshop führt in die Grundlagen des Projektmanagements ein und richtet sich an Promovierende und Postdocs ohne Vorkenntnisse. Sie lernen, Projekte systematisch zu planen und durchzuführen – von SMART-Zielen über Ressourcen- und Risikoanalysen bis hin zu agilen und klassischen Ansätzen. The KIT Postdoc Meeting is thought as a platform for you to get in touch with other KIT postdocs and their research projects and to inform yourself about relevant topics concerning the postdoc phase.
 
We will start with a short keynote speech on a topic of your choice. Following the keynote lecture, two KIT postdocs each can briefly present themselves and their research project. All participants are cordially invited to conclude the evening with a dinner at a restaurant on self-payment basis.

However, given that employees in private enterprises often are required to both pursue different goals and work differently compared to employees in research institutions, scientists need to adopt different mindsets and competences for succeeding in a business environment. In addition to specialist professional knowledge, transferrable skills in the areas of management methods, leadership and communication are particularly required.
 
To give you a head start for a successful career entry in the private sector, this e-learning program provides initial insights into key competences specifically for the business context. A selection of short online courses examines a variety of relevant topics, taking examples from everyday business life as their starting point. Apart from conveying theoretical background information they offer practical advice and provide suggestions for exercises and self-reflexion. Competences acquired by working thouroughly on these e-learnings can also be helpful for similar tasks in other than industrial work contexts, of course.

Description:
Presenting oneself and one’s work can be stressful, especially in high-pressure academic environments. In addition, academics often face challenges such as navigating criticism, managing mixed expectations, and combating a lack of confidence or support. Imposter syndrome and self-doubt can further intensify these pressures.
 
This workshop uses theater techniques and transformational coaching exercises to help participants explore and redefine their professional roles, take ownership of their expertise, and transform stress into motivation.
 
Participants will learn to:
•            Utilize strategies for reframing criticism and managing their inner critic.
•            Apply techniques to project confidence and competence in presentations.
•            Prepare and present an elevator pitch (or short self-introduction)
•            Build awareness of the roles they play and craft the roles they aspire to.
•            Use tools to transform stress and pressure into energy and motivation.
 
 
Approach:
This two-day workshop employs a combination of meaningful practice, individual and group activities, theater-based methods, and transformational coaching exercises to achieve these objectives.

Für Forschende wird es immer wichtiger, ihre Themen überzeugend und verständlich kommunizieren zu können und diese gut zu präsentieren.  Häufig stehen ihnen dabei nur wenige Minuten zur Verfügung, wie beispielsweise beim Postervortrag auf einem Fachkongress oder einem Tag der offenen Tür. Dabei gilt es, das eigene Forschungsthema möglichst prägnant und verständlich zu vermitteln. Dabei reicht die Spannweite vom fachlichen Vortrag im Kolleg:innenkreis bis zur pointierten Formulierung für Entscheidungsträger:innen.
 
Die Teilnehmenden trainieren, wie sie ihre Präsentationen auf die jeweilige Zielgruppe hin optimieren. Sie verbessern ihr eigenes Auftreten und lernen, ihre Inhalte so aufzubereiten und darzustellen, dass ihr Publikum sie versteht. Unter Anleitung des Dozierenden erfahren sie in praktischen Übungen, wie ein wirkungsvoller Vortrag aussehen kann. Individuelles Feedback durch Videoanalysen machen die Teilnehmenden fit für kommende Präsentationen.

As a scientist, you regularly communicate your expertise to various audiences – not only to people from within your scientific community but also to collaborators from different fields, grant bodies, students, the general public. When writing for or speaking to others, however, you must overcome multiple obstacles for your message to be understood, such as peoples’ short attention span, differences in prior knowledge and ignorance about your technical language. If you do not design your communication with these barriers in mind, your ideas are unlikely to reach your intended audience.
 
To enable scientists sharing their knowledge with their diverse audiences, this workshop will introduce some versatile strategies for comprehensible communication. Learn, for example, how your topics can be portrayed so that they capture the attention of experts and non-experts alike and how you can effortlessly convey the meaning of discipline-specific concepts. As a result, your papers, posters and presentations will be readily understood.
 
We will also explore how recently introduced AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGTP can support you in designing comprehensible communication.

Young scientists like you often face an onslaught of daily challenges like teaching, research projects or administrative tasks. Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
 
In order to keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.

Self-organization and self-motivation: increase productivity and efficiency Defining personal goals and setting priorities Establishing and/or optimizing daily and weekly planning Recognizing and using your individual performance curve Setting parameters for working effectively, maximizing efficiency Energy management and work-life balance In the workshop, theoretical foundations and models are discussed and reflected in individual and group work. The workshop will introduce basic issues of research integrity by addressing important guidelines of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and specific regulations of KIT for safeguarding good research practice – relevant for every early career researcher@KIT.

Planning research projects and handling and publishing your research results are crucial skills for all researchers and require the competent usage of research data management (RDM). RDM is essential for disseminating research results and thus provides an important step for a career in science and research. Effective data management can help optimize research outputs, increase the impact of your research and support open scientific research.
 
This training event will provide you with basic RDM skills and help you make informed decisions about managing your research data, regardless of your discipline or academic field. You will receive in-depth training on best practices for documenting, organizing, sharing and archiving your research data following the FAIR data principles.
 
Practical applications of RDM are the foci, showing you best practices on how to create or improve data management plans for research projects and how to use an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) for documentation purposes. Furthermore, as part of the workshop, you learn about the cross-disciplinary RDM services at KIT. Along the research data life cycle, tools such as Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO), Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data) and the generic research data repository RADAR4KIT and some short exercises round of the training. After completing this workshop, you will be better able to manage your data throughout the research data lifecycle, from project planning to completion.
 
Learning objectives
Upon completing this workshop, you will be able to:
- Identify legal and data protection issues and licenses concerning your research data,
- Apply best practices for documenting, organizing, sharing and archiving your research data,
- Explain the FAIR principles and the importance of metadata for research,
- Learn about the usefulness of applying Ontologies to your research data,
- Create data management plans for your research,
- Use tools and services at KIT for your research data management purposes (ELNs such as Chemotion and research repositories such as RADAR4KIT) and
- Find available information and support for RDM.

Bewerbungsunterlagen optimieren: Wir besprechen Inhalt, Form und Struktur zur Erstellung überzeugender Lebensläufe und Anschreiben – angepasst an nationale und internationale Anforderungen. Erfolgreich ins Bewerbungsgespräch: Von der Vorbereitung über Selbstpräsentation bis hin zur Interaktion – wir erarbeiten alle wichtigen Stationen des Gesprächs sowie wichtige Kriterien und typische Abläufe. Sie erhalten individuelles Feedback durch Übungselemente. Unterschiede in Bewerbungen innerhalb und außerhalb der Wissenschaft: Erfahren Sie, wie sich die Anforderungen und Herangehensweisen je nach Berufsfeld unterscheiden und wie Sie Ihre Bewerbung darauf abstimmen können. Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt. 
 
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Verschiedene Zertifizierungen haben daher ebenso ihren Platz im Workshop wie auch ein kurzer Blick auf agiles Projektmanagement. Auf diese Weise erhalten die Teilnehmenden einen guten Überblick und einen Rahmen, um ihr Vorwissen zu strukturieren.

Viele Aspekte wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeiten berühren urheberrechtliche Fragen – ohne dass sich Nachwuchsforschende oftmals darüber bewusst sind.
 
Die Informationsveranstaltung führt Sie an die wichtigsten rechtlichen Regelungen heran und bietet einen Überblick über die folgenden vier Themenbereiche, die für Nachwuchsforschende von besonderer Bedeutung sind:
 
Urheberrecht in Grundzügen für Forschung und Lehre Zitatrecht und Bildrechte Autoren- und Verlagsrechte Creative-Commons-Lizenzen und Open Content  
Wie kann ich Ideen oder Gedankengänge anderer Personen in legitimer Weise für meine eigene Publikation verwenden? Unter welchen Bedingungen kann ich Bildmaterialien benutzen? Welche Auswirkungen hat die KI auf das Urheberrecht? Wie bewahre ich die Rechte an meinen eigenen Publikationen? Wie kann ich fremde Materialien in meiner Lehrveranstaltung einsetzen? Was ist eine Creative-Commons-Lizenz und wie kann ich diese Lizenzen nutzen? Das Seminar behandelt typische Fragen, die sich in der Forschungsarbeit, der Lehre sowie bei Dissertationen und anderen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen stellen.
 
Sie lernen das Urheberrechtssystem und die wichtigsten Regelungen für Forschung und Lehre in einem Überblick kennen. In einem zweiten Teil werden wir auf die Autoren- und Verlagsrechte eingehen. Im dritten Teil möchten wir Sie mit dem Zitatrecht vertraut machen. Wir werden dabei einen Schwerpunkt auf die Bildrechte legen. Im vierten und letzten Teil beschäftigen wir uns mit Open Content. Am Beispiel der Creative Commons zeigen wir Ihnen freie Lizenzen und die Möglichkeiten der Nutzung für Ihre Arbeit.
 
Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, dass Sie Sicherheit in der Anwendung des Urheberrechts für Ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit bekommen und Sie bewusst Ihre Rechte und Pflichten im Sinne guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis wahrnehmen können.

With the arrival of ChatGPT, a powerful and versatile tool has become available for knowledge workers. This workshop is designed to introduce early-career researchers to potential applications of ChatGPT (and related platforms) in their daily work and to familiarize them with essential principles for its effective use.
 
Key Topics include:
Ideation: Discover how ChatGPT can aid in generating ideas for problem-solving Writing: Learn how ChatGPT can ease drafting and editing documents as well as adapting your messages to different audiences. Teaching: Explore how ChatGPT can assist in course development, instructional activities, and supporting learners.  
In addition to these core areas, participants will gain insights into general principles for creating effective prompts (i.e., prompt engineering) that can be applied across various domains. By the end of the workshop, participants will thereby have acquired valuable skills that can significantly enhance their work efficiency and productivity.

The KIT Postdoc Meeting is thought as a platform for you to get in touch with other KIT postdocs and their research projects and to inform yourself about relevant topics concerning the postdoc phase.
 
We will start with a short keynote speech on a topic of your choice. Following the keynote lecture, two KIT postdocs each can briefly present themselves and their research project. All participants are cordially invited to conclude the evening with a dinner at a restaurant on self-payment basis.

Die Anforderungen an die Wissenschaftskommunikation gehen verstärkt in Richtung von Open Access und Open Science. Mittlerweile verlangen auch viele Forschungsförderer, dass von ihnen geförderte Forschungsergebnisse möglichst unmittelbar weltweit zugänglich gemacht werden. Das wissenschaftliche Publikationswesen befindet sich weltweit in einem Transformationsprozess, der es für Forschende nicht immer leicht macht, den Überblick über Services und Förderfonds zu erhalten. Die Veranstaltung geht auf aktuelle Entwicklungen rund um das Thema Open Access ein und stellt die wichtigsten Open-Access-Publikationsservices der KIT-Bibliothek vor (darunter Repository KITopen, KIT-Verlag sowie den KIT-Publikationsfonds).
