Nachwuchsforschende werden mit verschiedenen Herausforderungen konfrontiert, die zu Konflikten führen können, zum Beispiel im Betreuungsverhältnis, innerhalb der Arbeitsgruppe, im Hinblick auf Finanzierungsfragen oder hinsichtlich des selbststrukturierten Arbeitens. Die herausfordernde Phase kann auch persönliche Probleme mit sich bringen. Sollten Sie sich in einer solchen oder ähnlichen Situation befinden, können Sie bei verschiedenen Anlaufstellen am KIT Unterstützung finden. e-learning
On many occasions, young scientists communicate about their work, project or institution with the public or the media. This basic course of the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik) gives participants an overview of communicating with target groups outside of academia and teaches first practical basics. The focus is on topics such as dimensions of science communication, the interaction of communicators and target groups, or dealing with the media.

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 28. und 29. Januar 2026.
Betriebswirtschaftliches Verständnis und betriebswirtschaftliche Kompetenzen sind in vielen unterschiedlichen Bereichen des beruflichen Alltags immer häufiger erforderlich. Da das jeweilige fachwissenschaftliche Studium diese Kenntnisse oftmals nicht vermittelt, wird im Rahmen dieses Workshops eine wissenschaftlich fundierte, grundlegende sowie anschauliche und praxisorientierte Einführung in die zentralen Bereiche der Betriebswirtschaftslehre gegeben.
Ausgehend von gängigen Fehlannahmen und Missverständnissen in Bezug auf Ziel und Vorgehen bei betriebswirtschaftlichen Entscheidungsprozessen wird im Workshop beispielbezogen die Relevanz für die Zielerreichung in Organisationen erarbeitet. Ausgehend von den Zielsetzungen wird auf das Marktumfeld, die möglichen Organisationsstrukturen und das Produktions- und Absatzmanagement als relevante Teilbereiche der Betriebswirtschaft näher eingegangen.
Der Workshop richtet sich an Promovierende und Postdocs aller Fakultäten (außer im Bereich der VWL und BWL), welche sich auch in Hinblick auf ihre berufliche Zukunft ein Grundverständnis zu betriebswirtschaftlichen Fragestellungen aufbauen wollen.

Total possible duration of the course: ca. 3 months. Meetings may take place between February 2, 2026 and April 30, 2026 and are individually arranged. Therefore, the course might start on a day other than February 2.
This course, adapted to your level and your goals, aims to give you confidence in your ability to communicate in the language. It is ideal for people who want to improve their English but either:
1. don't have time to attend a regular class or
2. have specific learning requirements which may not be met in a group-based course.
This course adapts to suit you. The focus can be on improving writing skills, dealing with grammar or developing your fluency in speaking.
After registration, you will be contacted to set up your first appointment at which you will agree on an individual program based on your requirements. Then meetings will take place either face-to-face at an agreed location or online, or a mixture of both. A total of 4 academic hours are available for each participant.
If you would like to do this course together with a colleague, please indicate this on your registration. In such an arrangement, participants must be at or near the same language level and have similar learning goals (speaking, presenting or writing). In order for this to work, participants must arrange their own partnerships, as student pairing is not carried out by the language department.
Total possible duration of the course: ca. 3 months (Meetings may take place between February 2, 2026 and April 30, 2026 and are individually arranged). February 2, 2026 is the first possible date but dates to be arranged with teacher individually beforehand.

Scientific Writing. Improving Your Scientific Writing Skills in English (Two-day) [On-site Workshop]

The event will be held in English and run for two days, on February 2, 2026, 9 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. and February 6, 2026, 9 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.
This workshop focuses on the language you use when writing scientific papers. Our aim is to improve your writing by talking about conventions in the field, producing your own texts and discussing further questions which arise whilst writing.
We start by briefly discussing the content of each section of a paper (Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion). As a group we will develop guidelines that can be used when writing your own text. Next, we will look at authentic sample texts to talk about conventions of style and possibly grammar. We will pay special attention to language patterns in specific subject areas as these tend to vary.
We will use another set of texts to practice editing. Then, you will be asked to apply your skills and write short texts of your own, e.g. a project summary, a critical review and a results section. You will receive feedback on your writing style and use of language. As questions related to language use, punctuation and grammar arise, we will discuss them.
By the end of the course, you will improve your ability to write about your research and comment on other writers’ research in English. You will sharpen your editing skills and develop a sense for appropriate style in a scientific text.
To decide whether this workshop is suitable for you, please consider the following information:
Language requirements: This EFL course is designed for English speakers of other languages, i.e. non-native speakers of English who have a mid to upper range of the Common European Frame of Reference (CEFR B2 - C1). We recommend that you take our placement test on ILIAS before starting the course. If your language level is B1, the course might seem rather challenging (and go a bit fast). If your language level is C2, keep in mind that we deal with issues of grammar and syntax that might seem simple to you. (Information on how to access the test can be found below.)
Topics not covered in the workshop: This course does not cover certain related aspects of preparing scientific manuscripts, such as the submission, review and publication of a paper. We also do not cover citation styles due to the wide variety of styles and requirements for different fields of science.

What makes research both successful and ethical? This workshop dives into the challenges early-career researchers face in balancing these goals. In a competitive publish-or-perish environment, dilemmas often arise:
Can I leave out statistical outliers to improve my results? When does “data massaging” become misconduct? How transparent must I be, while still staying competitive? What do I do if I notice misconduct by a colleague or face problematic expectations from my supervisor?
Through realistic case discussions, you’ll gain practical tools to navigate these conflicts and make informed, ethical decisions. Learn how to recognize and prevent scientific misconduct, reflect on your role as a researcher, and understand the ethical expectations placed on scientists in a broader social context.
This workshop will show you how ethical, responsible research is key to truly successful science.
Please plan 3-4 hours for pre-workshop activities.

With the rise of Generative AI chatbots, you can now apply advanced professional skills far more effectively than before. Techniques that once required long practice before they could be applied (e.g. in the realm of communication or creative problem-solving) can now be operationalized far more quickly with guided AI support. This shifts the focus in developing professional skills from lengthy acquisition to immediate application in collaboration with AI.
Building on the idea that through collaboration with AI we can augment our own capabilities, this seminar series shows how AI can be used as a cognitive partner in completing professional tasks. Participants will, on the one hand, learn key concepts from four domains essential for early-career researchers (communication, creativity, decision-making, and learning) and see how AI can be integrated as a collaborative partner to translate them into practice. Taken together, the examples from these domains will then also, on the other hand, suggest a general approach for competence development in the age of Generative AI.
This seminar will run for five weeks, with weekly meetings on Monday, 11:00 – 12:15:

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch statt, am 6. März 2026.
Als Nachwuchsforschende wird von Ihnen in erster Linie erwartet, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu befördern. Dabei ist es eine Sache, die Forschungsergebnisse mit dem nötigen fachlichen Handwerkszeug zu erzielen; eine ganz andere Sache ist es jedoch, die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und die eigene Forscherpersönlichkeit auch überzeugend und souverän nach außen hin zu vertreten. Genau darauf kommt es jedoch in vielen Situationen auch an. Sowohl innerhalb der Wissenschaft, wie auch für zukünftige Positionen außerhalb der Wissenschaft kann dieser zweite Aspekt ein Erfolgsfaktor für die Karriere sein.
Gleichzeitig ist diese Aufgabe in der Phase der wissenschaftlichen Qualifizierung oftmals neu und stellt daher für viele eine besondere Herausforderung dar – gerade, wenn das souveräne Auftreten erfahrenerer Mitstreitender vielleicht noch zusätzlich einschüchternd wirkt.
Der Workshop unterstützt Sie dabei, souveränes Kommunizieren und Auftreten einzuüben. Sie lernen, verschiedene Schemata der Kommunikation zu erkennen und damit gelassen umzugehen. Dazu gehören ebenfalls die Fähigkeiten, Grenzen zu setzen, mit Provokationen umzugehen und Selbstsicherheit auszustrahlen. Als Nachwuchsforschende wird von Ihnen in erster Linie erwartet, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu befördern. Dabei ist es eine Sache, die Forschungsergebnisse mit dem nötigen fachlichen Handwerkszeug zu erzielen; eine ganz andere Sache ist es jedoch, die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und die eigene Forscherpersönlichkeit auch überzeugend und souverän nach außen hin zu vertreten. Genau darauf kommt es jedoch in vielen Situationen auch an. Sowohl innerhalb der Wissenschaft, wie auch für zukünftige Positionen außerhalb der Wissenschaft kann dieser zweite Aspekt ein Erfolgsfaktor für die Karriere sein.
Gleichzeitig ist diese Aufgabe in der Phase der wissenschaftlichen Qualifizierung oftmals neu und stellt daher für viele eine besondere Herausforderung dar – gerade, wenn das souveräne Auftreten erfahrenerer Mitstreitender vielleicht noch zusätzlich einschüchternd wirkt.
Der Workshop unterstützt Sie dabei, souveränes Kommunizieren und Auftreten einzuüben. Sie lernen, verschiedene Schemata der Kommunikation zu erkennen und damit gelassen umzugehen. Dazu gehören ebenfalls die Fähigkeiten, Grenzen zu setzen, mit Provokationen umzugehen und Selbstsicherheit auszustrahlen. Agile project management allows running projects in changing and uncertain environments. Originally developed in the IT sector, agile project management is now widely used across various fields to respond flexibly and effectively to evolving conditions.
This one-day workshop introduces participants to the core ideas and principles of agile project management. The workshop offers the opportunity to use specific tools in practice to better understand the agile project management approach by using these applications. Additionally, you’ll explore IT tools such as Jira and Trello. Beyond theoretical input, the workshop emphasizes practical application through hands-on exercises, enabling participants to actively engage and apply what they learn.
The workshop will also provide a better understanding of SCRUM as a framework in the agile cosmos and its specifics.
After the workshop participants will have the opportunity to further explore the workshop contents through a provided podcast and a topic-specific GPT, allowing for independent learning.
After the workshop, you will be able to:
Deal with the most important terms and use tools from agile project management like Kanban. Distinguish when to use agile vs. traditional project management approaches. Utilize IT tools such as Jira and Trello to streamline agile project management. Adapt to changes in project requirements with flexibility and efficiency.

Scientific research is often difficult to comprehend for individuals both outside the respective discipline and academia in general, particularly if it is communicated solely in technical terms. However, in times in which it becomes ever more important for scientists to exchange information across disciplinary boundaries and with the public, it is vital that they know communication tools that help non-specialist audiences to gain a better understanding of their research. Given that humans generally process and store visual information (e.g. images, sketches) more effectively than text-based information, we focus on techniques that allow you to graphically present your research topics for a lay audience.
This seminar introduces participants to basic design principles and methods. It is interactive: Teaching content alternates with practical phases as well as question and answer sessions. The focus of the seminar lies on communication with audiences outside of academia. You will learn how to present your research topic more vividly and make it more accessible to non-trained audiences by creating an infographic. The seminar aims at teaching basic principles of design, sharing helpful resources and methods and facilitating your venture into visualisation. Data visualisation will not be discussed.
In particular, the following topics are covered:
• Basic design principles for visualisations
• Defining the essential aspects of your research: Finding your own core message
• Achieving more: Planning and sketching infographics
• Poster, presentation, comics: Different aims and visual requirements
• Introduction to AI-Tools

Writing a doctoral thesis is very challenging. But if you take a smart approach early on, you are likely to reach your objectives faster and achieve superior results. This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.

„Facts tell, stories sell“. Die bloße Auflistung der eigenen Laborergebnisse mag für eine Publikation in Fachzeitschriften genügen. Wer aber einen nachhaltigen Eindruck hinterlassen will – sei es zum Anstoßen von Forschungskooperationen bei Tagungen, zur Einwerbung von Fördermitteln bei öffentlichen Geldgebern und Industriepartnern, aber auch bei der Kurzpräsentation der eigenen wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit im Rahmen eines Vorstellungsgesprächs – umgibt seine fachlichen Leistungen mit einer ansprechenden Verpackung.
In diesem Workshop wird vermittelt, wie man aus einer Forschungsfrage eine spannende Geschichte konstruiert, und wie man diese mitreißend erzählt, um ihre Kernbotschaft nachhaltig im Gedächtnis eines spezifischen Auditoriums zu verankern. Mittels Videoreflexion wird die Bedeutung non- und paraverbaler Kommunikation hervorgehoben. In a nutshell: WAS will ich WEM WARUM WIE erzählen?

It supports the successful completion of complex tasks in everyday academic work and is equally relevant for future roles outside academia. Projects succeed when professional expertise is combined with solid management and self-management skills.
This workshop introduces the core principles of project management for doctoral researchers and postdocs without prior experience. Participants learn to plan and manage their projects systematically and to understand how structured project work contributes to effective research and long-term career development.
After the workshop you will be able to:
Plan and manage projects systematically by defining clear objectives, planning scope, resources, time and analysing stakeholders and risks Understand and implement the project life cycle including roles, activities, milestones, communication, risk management, work breakdown structure and project control Differentiate between classic, agile and hybrid project management approaches Identify typical pitfalls and apply suitable solutions Use relevant online project management tools

As a young researcher, you often take on leadership tasks for the first time – in your current position or in the course of your next career step. Being new to a leadership role can be challenging in itself while experiences might differ in terms of gender and personality.
This workshop will support you as a young leader to build a good understanding of what it means to establish a successful leadership style. Motivation, flexibility and transparency regarding communication and delegation are key factors to meet the demands of your role as a leader. An awareness of your inner attitude, self-reflection and a conscious development of your role with its various conditions help to create value in a positive and sustainable manner.
Which mindset enables you to fulfill the role as a leader convincingly? What are your expectations of your team members and what are their expectations of you as a leader? Where do you find yourself in terms of “command and control” versus “confidence in the ability of your members to organize themselves” and fulfill their tasks? For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.

In der Wissenschaft arbeiten viele Promovierende und Postdocs in interdisziplinären Projekten oder leiten kleinere Teams – oft ohne formale Führungsfunktion. Dennoch müssen sie Aufgaben koordinieren, Entscheidungen herbeiführen und Kolleg*innen motivieren, ohne auf klassische Weisungsbefugnisse zurückgreifen zu können. In der Wissenschaft arbeiten viele Promovierende und Postdocs in interdisziplinären Projekten oder leiten kleinere Teams – oft ohne formale Führungsfunktion. Dennoch müssen sie Aufgaben koordinieren, Entscheidungen herbeiführen und Kolleg*innen motivieren, ohne auf klassische Weisungsbefugnisse zurückgreifen zu können. Diese Form der „lateralen Führung" ist anspruchsvoll: Sie erfordert Klarheit über die eigene Rolle, kommunikatives Geschick und die Fähigkeit, Einfluss auf Augenhöhe zu nehmen.

Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
To keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.

We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Deutsch und an zwei Tagen statt, am 25. und 26. November 2026.
Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt.
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Verschiedene Zertifizierungen haben daher ebenso ihren Platz im Workshop wie auch ein kurzer Blick auf agiles Projektmanagement. Ganz gleich, in welcher Branche Sie sich nach Ihrer Promotion etablieren: Ohne Projektmanagement geht es in der Regel nicht. Ob als Freiberufler oder als leitende Mitarbeiterin in großen Konzernen: wesentliche Teile der Arbeit werden oftmals als Projekt geplant und durchgeführt.
Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die Bedürfnisse der Industrie führt der Workshop daher in die grundlegenden Werkzeuge und Techniken des Projektmanagements ein. Dabei wird immer wieder der Bezug zu verschiedenen Ansätzen und Standards hergestellt und auf Besonderheiten hingewiesen. Verschiedene Zertifizierungen haben daher ebenso ihren Platz im Workshop wie auch ein kurzer Blick auf agiles Projektmanagement. Auf diese Weise erhalten die Teilnehmenden einen guten Überblick und einen Rahmen, um ihr Vorwissen zu strukturieren.

Definition: Was ist ein Projekt? Unterschiede des Projektmanagements in Wissenschaft und Industrie Initiierung und von Projekten und Klärung der Voraussetzungen Projektplanung: Phasen, Meilensteine, Projektstrukturplan und Gantt-Charts Kalkulation und Controlling Ermittlung von Risiken und Zielen Standards und Zertifizierungen im Projektmanagement Aktuelle Trends und Themen
Die Teilnehmenden werden aktiv eingebunden und arbeiten während des gesamten Workshops an verschiedenen Aufgaben mit.
Zielgruppe: Teilnehmer mit keinen oder geringen Kenntnissen im Projektmanagement.

As part of a personal roadmap, you take the opportunity to consciously reflect on your current professional and private situation. You will look at your personal goals and wishes and derive concrete steps for your further career and skills development.
What have I already achieved? What skills particularly characterize me? What are my strengths? What is important to me? How do I visualize a successful future?
The first aim of the event is to take a closer look at the current status quo and generate an understanding of your present situation. Taking stock in this way will help you to take a focused approach to your life and career planning, create a basis for reflection for your longer-term professional and private decisions and work on your individual areas of development in a targeted manner.
In this way, you can develop goals for your further career planning from a holistic perspective and derive the first specific steps.
