Basics of Project Management (three-day) [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
The event will be held in English and run for three days, on April 17, 2024, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 18, 2024, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, and April 19, 2024, 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
Many researchers, especially doctoral candidates and postdocs, view their activities primarily from a professional perspective. Project management is perceived above all as a competence that future employers outside academia expect. However, a basic understanding of project management should be seen as a valuable career building block, whether inside or outside academia. After all, everyday working life in science is also strongly characterised by project work. Many complex scientific activities can only be managed efficiently and purposefully with the help of good project management. This is because projects are successful when the important management and self-leadership tasks are mastered as well as the technical aspects.
This workshop introduces the general basics of project management. The target group of this workshop are early career researchers without any particular prior knowledge of project management who would like to familiarise themselves with this working method, work more intensively in or with project structures and want to professionalise themselves in this area.
After this workshop you will:
- have the tools to systematically plan and implement projects: Define project objectives SMART, plan scope, resources, time, stakeholder analysis, risk analysis.
- know and understand the phases of the project life cycle: Roles, activities, milestones, communication in the project, risk management, work breakdown structure, project control
- have explored new approaches to solving your project challenges: classic, agile and hybrid project management
- know about typical hurdles from project practice
- have an insight into important online project management tools
The workshop is practice- and dialogue-oriented, experience-based and highly interactive. All phases of project management are illustrated using examples. The workshop also leaves room for a guided exchange of experiences. This provides the tools for professional, cross-method project management in science and beyond.
Please note: In addition to this workshop, KHYS offers other project management courses with different focal points, which may overlap in terms of content:
- Getting Started. The Path to a Successful Doctorate
- Project Management in Science and Technology
- Projektmanagement in der Industrie
- Agile Project Management (for advanced learners with prior knowledge in project management basics)
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.
