Applications and Interviews in Academia (including AI-Assistants) (two-day) [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
Dr. Daniel Mertens, Schiller & Mertens GbR, Scientists Need More
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on December 10 and 11, 2024.
This event helps postdocs and advanced doctoral researchers to prepare for the academic labour market and improve their application and interview skills with modern AI tools.
Even if postdocs have already been working in an academic environment since their studies and can well imagine a further academic career, it is often unclear what is expected in application letters and interviews for academic positions, how the application process works and how applicants can ideally prepare and present themselves.
Over the course of two half days, postdocs will learn how to identify job options, optimise their application material and prepare for interviews. Special attention will also be paid to how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used effectively in these steps. The workshop therefore also offers practical exercises and live demonstrations of various AI tools.
The aim is to prepare young researchers to present themselves confidently and professionally, especially on the academic labour market.
Participants should bring current job offers and, possibly, application documents to improve them during the event and receive direct feedback. Interview exercises can be carried out and optionally recorded (at the wish of the participants).
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on December 10 and 11, 2024.
Technical requirements: To participate in this event, you need a stable internet connection, a webcam and a microphone. Participants will receive further detailed information regarding the online-platform prior to the event.
If you are unable to attend an event, please inform us promptly via e-mail. This way you are allowing your colleagues the opportunity to participate and you help us to maintain the quality of our Further Education Program. Thank you!

Personal Roadmap for Career Orientation. What Skills Do I Have and Where Do I Want to Go? [ON-SITE WORKSHOP]
Workshop
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Bldg. 50.41, seminar room 145/146
Bldg. 50.41, seminar room 145/146
Verena Landgrebe, Patrizia Köhler, Human Resources Development and Vocational Training (PEBA)
As part of a personal roadmap, you have the opportunity to consciously reflect on your current professional and private situation. You will look at your personal goals and wishes and derive concrete steps for your further career and skills development.
What have I already achieved? What skills particularly characterize me? What are my strengths? What is important to me? How do I visualize a successful future?
The first aim of the event is to take a closer look at the current status quo and generate an understanding of your present situation. Taking stock in this way will help you to take a focused approach to your life and career planning, create a basis for reflection for your longer-term professional and private decisions and work on your individual areas of development in a targeted manner.
In this way, you can develop goals for your further career planning from a holistic perspective and derive the first specific steps.
Please note that a career assessment cannot provide individual career counselling. KHYS offers the following workshops for further career planning:
Karriereentscheidungen treffen. How to Shape Your Future. Career Planning for Postdocs
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.

You can access the e-learning from September 30, 2024 until December 19, 2024.
Statistical Methods for Research is targeted at young scientists who require a foundation course in statistics, specifically in the quantification of variability, providing students with the practical techniques they will need to conduct statistical analysis at postgraduate level and beyond. This course takes a cross-disciplinary approach and is compatible with all major statistics packages such as SPSS, GenStat, Minitab and Stata. It is rich with scenarios, worked examples, practical applications and interactive statistical models.
The course comprises the presentation of concepts, individual computer-based exercises for consolidation and other interactive learning activities. A major component of the course is analysing data through the use of mainstream statistics packages. This will enable students to gain statistical skills commonly used today in evidence-based decision making, driven by data gathered during the research process, such as the use of estimates, confidence intervals and hypothesis tests, and the building of statistical models. The following four areas are included in the course:
• Describing data well: Descriptive statistics
• Making good generalisations: Inferential statistics
• Formulating and testing statistical hypotheses
• Fitting appropriate statistical models and interpreting their output.
The course contains different tracks for the disciplines of Engineering, Natural Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Social Sciences and Business.
Statistical Methods for Research is based on a highly successful course from the University of Reading which has recorded an average improvement of 125% in student’s performances.
Duration of this course: 12,5 h

KHYS offers open consultation hours in principle every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. There you can safely discuss your situation. During this initial consultation, we offer information and advice on how to deal with challenging situations and conflicts. If applicable, we will refer you to other advisory offices. You are also welcome to make an appointment (also for an MS Teams meeting). Jutta Klein-Hitpaß will be happy to answer any questions you may have or to offer you an appointment.

Clemens Salm, Eventive - Face To Face Communication

Scientific Writing. Improving Your Ability to Write Scientific Texts in English (two-day) [ON-SITE WORKSHOP]
Workshop
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Bldg. 8.03, room 214
Bldg. 8.03, room 214
Matthew Shimohara, Sprachenzentrum (SPZ)
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on February 17 and 19, 2025.
This workshop focuses on the language you use when writing scientific papers. Our aim is to improve your writing by talking about conventions in the field, producing your own texts and discussing further questions which arise whilst writing.
We start by briefly discussing the content of each section of a paper (Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion). As a group we will develop guidelines that can be used when writing your own text. Next, we will look at authentic sample texts to talk about conventions of style and possibly grammar. We will pay special attention to language patterns in specific subject areas as these tend to vary.
We will use another set of texts to practice editing. Then, you will be asked to apply your skills and write short texts of your own, e.g. a project summary, a critical review and a results section. You will receive feedback on your writing style and use of language. As questions related to language use, punctuation and grammar arise, we will discuss them.
By the end of the course, you will improve your ability to write about your research and comment on other writers’ research in English. You will sharpen your editing skills and develop a sense for appropriate style in a scientific text.
To decide whether this workshop is suitable for you, please consider the following information:
Language requirements: This EFL course is designed for English speakers of other languages, i.e. non-native speakers of English who have a mid to upper range of the Common European Frame of Reference (CEFR B2 - C1). We recommend that you take our placement test on ILIAS before starting the course. If your language level is B1, the course might seem rather challenging (and go a bit fast). If your language level is C2, keep in mind that we deal with issues of grammar and syntax that might seem simple to you. (Information on how to access the test can be found below.)
Topics not covered in the workshop: This course does not cover certain related aspects of preparing scientific manuscripts, such as the submission, review and publication of a paper. We also do not cover citation styles due to the wide variety of styles and requirements for different fields of science.
Course materials will be distributed on ILIAS.
Instructions for taking the placement test and a link can be found here:

Was habe ich bereits erreicht? Welche Kompetenzen zeichnen mich besonders aus? Worin liegen meine Stärken? Was ist mir wichtig?
After the Doctorate. Career Planning for Doctoral Researchers How to Shape Your Future. Career Planning for Postdocs
Vielen Dank!

Ideas on Demand. How to Solve Problems More Creatively (Together with ChatGPT & Co.) [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
Dr. Stefan Götze, Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS)
The event will be held in English and run for one day, on March 10, 2025.
Whether developing a research project or implementing one, problem-solving is the researcher’s daily business. However, finding solutions to problems – irrespective of whether they are of conceptual or practical nature, whether they are big or small – can be time-consuming and feel frustrating, particularly once you encountered a mental block or seem to have exhausted the range of conceivable options.
Problem-solving, however, does not need to be agonizing. Quite the contrary, a small change in perspective or a little shift in thinking about a problem is often sufficient for an original solution to emerge. This workshop will introduce tactics for inducing more "Aha-Moments" in your work. Based on insights from the scientific study of problem-solving and creativity, you will learn tools facilitating greater originality and efficiency when needed.
We will also explore how recently introduced AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGTP can support your creative process.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.
The event will be held in English and run for one day, on March 10, 2025.
If you are unable to attend an event, please inform us promptly via e-mail. This way you are allowing your colleagues the opportunity to participate and you help us to maintain the quality of our Further Education Program. Thank you!

Souverän auftreten, effektiv kommunizieren [PRÄSENZ WORKSHOP]
Workshop
Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)
Geb. 30.96, Seminarraum 006 (EG)
Geb. 30.96, Seminarraum 006 (EG)
Lilia Tripodi, Lukas Bischof Hochschulberatung

Writing a doctoral thesis is very challenging. But if you take a smart approach early on, you are likely to reach your objectives faster and achieve superior results. This workshop focuses on the critical elements for a successful doctoral journey: Which mindsets, tools, and processes make a real difference on the way to a PhD? We concentrate on three areas: The efficient organization of tasks and notes, the productive communication with supervisors and the research community, and the structured reading and writing of academic papers. In each area, we will reflect on effective mindsets, tools, and workflows. The goal is for each participant to take away at least three specific ideas on how to substantially improve their own approach.
Major topics:
- Project management
- Efficient time management and self-motivation
- Managing the relationship to your supervisor
- Tools and strategies for effective literature research & note-taking

Dr. David M. Giltner, TurningScience
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on March 25 and 26, 2025.
Would you like to know how to be more employable in Industry? Most of us who complete a PhD in a science discipline will end up working outside of academia. But what is working in the private sector is really like? How do you find these jobs?
Do you feel confident that you can impress an industry hiring manager when you describe the very specialized research project you just spent years pursuing? And what kinds of jobs can a scientist get in a company anyway?
This interactive 2-day workshop helps you with these questions and many more about the exciting world that awaits scientists in the private sector!
The course will enable participants to:
Understand the rules for productivity and habits for success in industry. Design their own rewarding career path in the private sector. Describe many private sector career options that fit scientists well and why. Use the most effective methods for getting a good industry job. Have a better understanding of the online job search process Answer some of the most challenging interview questions they may encounter. Describe their research project in a way that will sound engaging to an industry manager who knows little about their research area. Figure out whether an industry career is a good option for them
The course is highly interactive, mostly based on lectures, discussions and interactive exercises.
More information about the workshop you can find here: https://youtu.be/vKEHFrGAOok

The event will be held in English and run for two days, on May 8 and 9, 2025.
As a young researcher, you often take on leadership tasks for the first time – in your current position or in the course of your next career step. Being new to a leadership role can be challenging in itself while experiences might differ in terms of gender and personality.
This workshop will support you as a young leader to build a good understanding of what it means to establish a successful leadership style. Motivation, flexibility and transparency regarding communication and delegation are key factors to meet the demands of your role as a leader. An awareness of your inner attitude, self-reflection and a conscious development of your role with its various conditions help to create value in a positive and sustainable manner.
Which mindset enables you to fulfill the role as a leader convincingly? What are your expectations of your team members and what are their expectations of you as a leader? Where do you find yourself in terms of “command and control” versus “confidence in the ability of your members to organize themselves” and fulfill their tasks? As a young researcher, you often take on leadership tasks for the first time – in your current position or in the course of your next career step. Being new to a leadership role can be challenging in itself while experiences might differ in terms of gender and personality.
This workshop will support you as a young leader to build a good understanding of what it means to establish a successful leadership style. Motivation, flexibility and transparency regarding communication and delegation are key factors to meet the demands of your role as a leader. An awareness of your inner attitude, self-reflection and a conscious development of your role with its various conditions help to create value in a positive and sustainable manner.

Ethics in the Lab. A Workshop on Scientific Misconduct and How to Avoid it [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
PD Dr. phil. Alexander Bagattini and Team, ARRTI (KIT Academy for Responsible Research, Teaching, and Innovation)
What is the relation between good and successful research, on the one hand, and ethical and responsible research, on the other hand?
This workshop focuses on typical conflicts that particularly early career researchers may face in the context of a publish-or-perish culture: Is it okay for me to ignore and leave out statistical “outliers” when presenting my research data in case they impact the overall results more than I would like? Is such data “massaging” already scientific misconduct? How transparent must research practice be, when at the same time one has to succeed in the competitive world of scientific research? How to respond when you notice academic misconduct by a colleague? How should you handle problematic expectations of your supervisor?
In this workshop, however, we not only want to explain that these areas of conflict exist, but above all provide tools that can help you make your own decisions. We will do this by discussing realistic cases and using these cases to illustrate how easy it is to overlook important things and thus unintentionally overstep boundaries. In this way, participants can acquire the skills they need to recognise and avoid scientific misconduct. The workshop provides general skills and knowledge of research ethics needed for scientists to address the questions raised above. Participants attain the skills to rationally reflect on their role as a scientist from an ethical standpoint, including the specific expectations that role involves in a broader social context.
The workshop will show that successful research goes hand in hand with ethical and responsible research.
Please plan 3-4 hours for pre-workshop activities.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members as well as for doctoral reserachers and postdocs from universities of the EPICUR alliance.
Thank you!

Conference Presentation Training. Engaging the Listener in Your Talk (two-day) [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
Julie Stearns, Impulsplus
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on May 20 and 21, 2025.
For young scientists, it is a regular and important task to present their work to others. At the same time, however, to persuasively communicate one’s ideas to colleagues or decision-making bodies is often considered challenging. Yet, being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques such as the use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language.
This workshop provides participants the opportunity to improve their conference presentation skills. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve verbal and nonverbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower the speaker. Attention will also be given to structural and language aspects to improve clarity and flow of the talk.
Contents in Brief
• Effectively introducing yourself
• Engaging the audience in one’s talk
• Affirming the strengths and individual style of the speaker
• Improving body language and vocal quality
• Structuring your talk
• Constructive tactics for dealing with nervousness
• Dealing with challenging questions (Q&A sessions)
• Networking at conferences
Methods
• Voice and body techniques
• Partner work in “break out rooms”
• Language practice and analysis
• Interactive activities with online tools
Please note: Participants will be required to prepare a 3 to 5-minute presentation based on their research focus; the use of slides is optional. This will provide a basis for applying the practical aims of the workshop.
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on May 20 and 21, 2025.

Francesca Carlin
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on September 18 and 19, 2025.
Description:
Presenting oneself and one’s work can be stressful, especially in high-pressure academic environments. In addition, academics often face challenges such as navigating criticism, managing mixed expectations, and combating a lack of confidence or support. Imposter syndrome and self-doubt can further intensify these pressures.
This workshop uses theater techniques and transformational coaching exercises to help participants explore and redefine their professional roles, take ownership of their expertise, and transform stress into motivation.
Participants will learn to:
• Utilize strategies for reframing criticism and managing their inner critic.
• Apply techniques to project confidence and competence in presentations.
• Prepare and present an elevator pitch (or short self-introduction)
• Build awareness of the roles they play and craft the roles they aspire to.
• Use tools to transform stress and pressure into energy and motivation.
Approach:
This two-day workshop employs a combination of meaningful practice, individual and group activities, theater-based methods, and transformational coaching exercises to achieve these objectives.
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.

Geb. 20.30, Seminarraum 4.048 …
Dr. Ulrike Brandt-Bohne, NaWik

Busting Jargon. Tactics for Comprehensible Communication in Science (two-day) [ONLINE WORKSHOP]
Online Seminar
Online
Dr. Stefan Götze, Karlsruhe House of Young Scientists (KHYS)
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on September 29 and October 6, 2025.
As a scientist, you regularly communicate your expertise to various audiences – not only to people from within your scientific community but also to collaborators from different fields, grant bodies, students, the general public. When writing for or speaking to others, however, you must overcome multiple obstacles for your message to be understood, such as peoples’ short attention span, differences in prior knowledge and ignorance about your technical language. If you do not design your communication with these barriers in mind, your ideas are unlikely to reach your intended audience.
To enable scientists sharing their knowledge with their diverse audiences, this workshop will introduce some versatile strategies for comprehensible communication. Learn, for example, how your topics can be portrayed so that they capture the attention of experts and non-experts alike and how you can effortlessly convey the meaning of discipline-specific concepts. As a result, your papers, posters and presentations will be readily understood.
We will also explore how recently introduced AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGTP can support you in designing comprehensible communication.
Technical requirements: To participate in this event, you need a stable internet connection, a webcam and a microphone. Participants will receive further detailed information regarding the online-platform prior to the event.

The last big milestone in a PhD is the oral defense of the dissertation, which brings particular challenges in communication. This workshop is aimed at doctoral candidates, who want to engage in intensive preparation for their disputation.
Based on the individual experiences of the participants, presentation techniques and defense strategies are developed in the workshop. This includes appropriately interpreting scientific study results during the course of the disputation as well as adequately reacting to possibly critical questions in response.
Strategies for convincing argumentative as well as rhetorical positioning during the disputation are conveyed. The PhD candidates actively implement these in the most important part of the workshop – the disputation simulations. If required, managing stage fright and nervousness can also be addressed.
This event is open to doctoral researchers who are KHYS members

Manuela Schnaubelt, Stress and Time Management Coach, Master of Business Administration, Systemic Coach
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on October 15 and 29, 2025.
Young scientists like you often face an onslaught of daily challenges like teaching, research projects or administrative tasks. Given that academics are also often expected to be flexible and constantly available, it is only natural that you feel at times overwhelmed. Moreover, those many last-minute, short-term assignments often take precedence and can keep you distracted from more important, long-term goals and ambitions as well as your personal interests.
In order to keep your priorities in sight, you thus need a carefully thought-out time and self-management system. In this workshop, you will learn to set priorities and forge realistic plans in order to balance the demands of research and your personal life goals.
Workshop topics include:
Self-organization and self-motivation: increase productivity and efficiency Defining personal goals and setting priorities Establishing and/or optimizing daily and weekly planning Recognizing and using your individual performance curve Setting parameters for working effectively, maximizing efficiency Energy management and work-life balance In the workshop, theoretical foundations and models are discussed and reflected in individual and group work. After the first day participants receive practical exercises to work on at home in case they are interested in enhancing deeper understanding of the topics.
If you need guidance beyond the workshop on personal challenges or conflict situations, you can contact the following advisory offices: https://www.khys.kit.edu/english/advisory-offices.php

Methoden:
Kurzpräsentationen ressourcenorientierte Coaching-Übungen (Klein-) Gruppendiskussionen Kreativitätstechniken und Rollenspiele
Dieser Workshop ist eine ideale Ergänzung zu unseren Karriereplanungs-Workshops „After the Doctorate. Career Planning for Doctoral Researchers” und “How to Shape Your Future. Career Planning for Postdocs”.

Personal Roadmap for Career Orientation. What Skills Do I Have and Where Do I Want to Go? [ON-SITE WORKSHOP]
Workshop
TBA
Patrizia Köhler, Human Resources Development and Vocational Training (PEBA)
After the Doctorate. Career Planning for Doctoral Researchers How to Shape Your Future. Career Planning for Postdocs
This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.
If you are unable to attend an event, please inform us promptly via e-mail. This way you are allowing your colleagues the opportunity to participate and you help us to maintain the quality of our Further Education Program. Thank you!
